Being the first film to be shown at Auckland’s historic Hollywood Cinema after Auckland’s coronavirus lockdown was lifted, it was no surprise that the event was a sold-out night.
An enthusiastic crowd gathered at the historic single-screen cinema which was built in 1915 and is renowned for showing arthouse and cult classic movies.
True Romance, a 1993 American romantic crime film written by Quentin Tarantino and directed by Tony Scott, seemed to be the perfect choice for reopening night.
Back in the 1990s, despite the film receiving highly positive reviews, with critics praising its dialogue, characters, and quirky style, it was initially a box-office failure. Over the years, however, it has most certainly earned a cult following. Today, in fact, it is heralded as one of the best American films of the 1990s.
The film’s protagonists – Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette – are joined by an impressive supporting cast including James Gandolfini, Dennis Hopper, Michael Rapaport, Bronson Pinchot, Val Kilmer, Gary Oldman, Brad Pitt, and Christopher Walken.
The film tells the story of Alabama Whitman (Arquette) and her husband Clarence (Slater) who go on the run from the Mafia after stealing a shipment of drugs.
The film was the first Tarantino movie to be released following the huge success of Reservoir Dogs in 1992. Tarantino wrote the screenplay, but this was the first film release that he wrote that was not also directed by him. It is said that Tarantino sold the screenplay for a mere $50,000 and used part of that money to purchase the Chevelle Malibu driven by John Travolta’s character in his 1994 film ‘Pulp Fiction’.
True Romance takes us on an exotic, exciting and often violent adventure shot against a Southern California landscape. With plenty of artistic licence and pop culture references, the film also includes a soundtrack consisting of a wide variety of music, ranging from rock to dance music and a haunting melodic score by Hans Zimmer. Alongside its cult following, True Romance is also considered by many to be one of Tony Scott’s best made films.
