Now we will look at using these steps on the example questions you saw at the beginning of the lesson. First, read the sentence closely, and identify the keywords. In this example, the keywords would be visitors, UK, travel without and tour company. Then scan the passage to find the area you think contains the answer. Then go back to the question and read the list of possible options. Now read the text in detail and dismiss any unsuitable options. For example, option A is not mentioned as the reason for travelling without a tour company. For option B, the paragraph does talk about expense, but does not relate this to either independent or tour operated travel. For option D, the text states that ‘historical links’ make Britain a popular destination for backpackers, but this ‘has long been’ the situation and does not refer to why more and more people are travelling independently. Therefore, the correct answer is C.
For Type B sentence completion questions, there are only 5 steps to follow. First, read the sentence closely. Then identify the keywords that will help you find the answer. In this example, the keywords are transport arrangements, in advance, manageable. Scan the passage to find the relevant area and then read the question again. Finally turn back to the passage and read in detail to confirm the correct answer. Here we can see that the correct answer is costs.
