Model answer – making a request

Now read the model answer below.

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

Your hobby is collecting books and there is a particular rare book that you want to buy. You have found information on the internet about a shop that sells it but it is a long way from where you live.

Write a letter to the shop owner. In your letter:

• Explain the situation
• Suggest a time you would be able to visit the shop
• Ask if they could hold the item for you

You should write at least 150 words.

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to you as I recently discovered through searching on the internet that you appear to have in stock one particular publication for which I have been searching for some considerable time now.

The title of the book is ‘Calm Waters’ by J. F. Thomas and I would be extremely keen to purchase it as I am an avid collector of rare and first edition books. The problem is that I am based in Green Bay which is around 50 kilometres away from you.

I would be able to make the trip over to your shop on the weekend of July 10th and I would like to enquire as to whether there is any possibility of you holding the book for me until that date as I am concerned that it may be sold in the meantime.

I would appreciate it if you could let me know whether you are able to help with my request.

I look forward very much to your reply and thank you for your assistance.

Yours sincerely

R. Duncan
