Fragmented sentences

Fragmented sentences (also called ‘fragments’) occur when a sentence is missing an important word like a verb or subject.

Here are some examples of fragments:

  • The government’s responsibility.
  • Asked the teacher for more homework.
  • After he finished the test.
  • The last one in the room.

In the fragments above, we can see that the sentence is not complete, it does not express a ‘full’ idea. They could have been written like this:

  • It is the government’s responsibility.
  • He asked the teacher for more homework.
  • After he finished the test, he went home.
  • The last one in the room should turn off the light.
