Films and television have both positive and negative impacts on society. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages then give your opinion.

While movies and the images we see on television bring both benefits and drawbacks to society, the disadvantages are outweighed by the benefits as I will now explain.

The films and television we watch enhance our lives in a number of ways. First of all, they allow us access into aspects of life outside of our own day to day experience. Moreover, they can increase our awareness of international issues, not only through news programmes but also through the storylines of films made in different places; to illustrate, while watching a French film we are able to learn a great deal of information about the culture and attitudes in that country.

However, the images brought into our homes by films and television are not always beneficial. Many people believe that there is too much sex and violence on our screens and that children in particular are exposed to information it would be better they did not see. Even news stories these days are much more graphic than they were in the past, showing, for example, the injuries of victims of a bomb explosion.

Overall, it is my belief that films and television make important contributions which are more significant than any detrimental effect they may have. After all, people are able to decide what type of new stories or films they wish to watch, and parents should be able to monitor the types of shows seen by their children.

To conclude, movies and television have for a long time played an important role in our entertainment and it is likely that this will continue.
