How long can humans live? In recent times, a number of studies regarding longevity have been published, interestingly with somewhat conflicting views, and the findings of the studies appear to fall into two camps. Some argue that it is not correct to place a limit at all, and some go further, arguing that with technological, medical and aged-care advances, life expectancies may one day be limitless.

Genetics professor Siegfried Hekimi, of Montreal’s McGill University in Canada, puts it simply, “If people live on average to 80 or 90…, then the very long lived may make it to 100 or 120. So, if the average lifespan keeps expanding, that would mean the long-lived would live… beyond 115 years.” His basic argument is that all the evidence indicates it is too early to claim that there is a maximum lifespan for humans. In 2016, it was claimed by researchers at New York’s Albert Einstein College of Medicine, in a study published in the journal Nature, that the maximum lifespan could accurately be placed at 115 years, with the very rare exception exceeding that, for example, the oldest verified living human was Jeanne Louise Calment who died in 1997 in France, aged 122 years and 164 days. Their findings were based on statistics which reflected American lifespans during the 20th century. In 1900, the average life expectancy was 47 years and by 1970, this had increased to just over 70 years, and continued to increase marginally past 2010 when a slight decrease was first recorded. The lead researcher of the study team, Jan Vijg, pointed out that the upper limits of lifespan may have peaked in the U.S. during the 1990s, but this is yet to be determined. Vijg also noted that although, on average, lifespans seem to be increasing, the maximum lifespan, according to their calculations, had been reached.
