Understanding PTE Part 2 Item type 3- Re-order paragraphs

What you have to do for this question type:

For this task, you are judged on your ability to understand the organisation and cohesion of an academic text. You will need to put sections of a reading text in the correct order. Several text boxes appear on screen in a random order. You organise the text boxes into the correct  order by selecting the text boxes and dragging them across the screen.

Task length and timing:

Each complete text can be up to 150 words. You will need to re-order 2 or 3 texts.

More information:

There are two ways you can move the text:

  • Left-click on a box to select it (it will be outlined in blue), hold the left mouse button down and drag it to the position you want to put it in.
  • Left-click on a box to select it, and then left-click on the left and right arrow buttons to move it across. On the right panel, you can also use the up and down arrow buttons to re-order the boxes.

To deselect a box, left-click somewhere else on the screen.

The scoring for this question type:

This question type affects the scoring of reading. If all the text boxes are in the correct order, you receive the maximum score points for this question type. 1 point is awarded for a correct answer and 0 points for an incorrect answer. Keep in mind that if one text box is in the wrong place, that means another text box must also be incorrect, so that will cost you 2 points.

Useful tips:

  • Scan the text in the boxes to understand the main idea of each one. Identify the key words.
  • You can use the key words to get an overall idea of what the whole text is about. This will help you find the logical order for the information in the text boxes.
  • Find the topic sentences in the text. These will also help you find the logical order for the information in the text boxes (a topic sentence is a clear statement about the topic, and all the other sentences in the paragraph relate in some way to this sentence).
  • Reference words are common and can really help!
