The seventh question type you need to complete in the PTE listening test is the highlight incorrect words question type.
What you have to do for this question type:
With this type of question, you are judged on your ability to listen to a recording and identify the differences between what you hear and a provided transcript. The transcript of the recording appears on screen. As you listen you will need to identify the words in the transcript that are different from what you hear in the recording.
Task length and timing:
You are given 10 seconds before an audio recording that is 15-50 seconds long will play automatically. You will only be able to listen once. You will hear a total of either 2 or 3 audio recordings.

To select an answer, click on it using the left button on the mouse. The answers you select are highlighted yellow. If you want to change an answer, left-click on the option again to deselect it, or left-click on a different option.
The scoring for this question type:
This question type affects your listening and reading score. Each selected answer is scored as either correct or incorrect. If you select all the incorrect words you will be given the maximum score. If one or more of your answers are wrong, partial credit scoring applies. Correct answers gain 1 point. You can lose marks for any incorrect answers (1 point is deducted for every incorrect answer). Don’t guess! Choose answers you are fairly confident about.
Useful tips:
- In the 10 seconds before the recording starts to play, you will have time to skim the transcript, but you won’t have time to read it word for word.
- Look quickly for any words that might be key information such as nouns, verbs and adjectives. Before you start listening, try to decide what the general topic is about.
- When the recording starts, it is a good idea to move the cursor along the screen as you hear the transcript being read out. Click on any words that are different to what you have listened to.
