How to introduce yourself in English

How to introduce yourself in English. On this page, we will look at how you can introduce yourself and other people in English. Let’s start with some example conversations.

How to introduce yourself

(Example: at a party)

Sarah: Hi, I’m Sarah.
John: Hi Sarah, my name is John. Great to meet you.
Sarah: Yes, you too.

(Example: at a business meeting)

Sarah: Good morning, my name is Sarah Wilson.
John: Good morning Ms Wilson, my name is John Smith. It’s a pleasure to meet you.
Sarah: You too, and please call me Sarah.

The way that you introduce yourself changes on the situation – the words you would use at a party, for example, are different to the words you would use at a business meeting.

Continuing the conversation

After you have introduced yourself, it’s a good idea to say something to keep the conversation going. You can talk about where you are, how you got there, or where you’re from for example. Let’s use the examples from above:

(Example: at a party)

Sarah: Hi, I’m Sarah.
John: Hi Sarah, my name is John. Great to meet you.
Sarah: Yes, you too. It’s a great party!
John: Yes it is. Do you know many people here?
Sarah: No, only Helen. How about you?
John: Well, I work with David, so I know him and his wife.

(Example: at a business meeting)

Sarah: Good morning, my name is Sarah Wilson.
John: Good morning Ms Wilson, my name is John Smith. It’s a pleasure to meet you.
Sarah: You too, and please call me Sarah. Did you have any problems getting here?
John: No, it was easy. There wasn’t much traffic.
Sarah: That’s good – sometimes it can get very busy at this time of the day.

Introducing other people

Sometimes you might need to introduce a third person to someone. Read the conversations below and practise introducing other people in English.

Sarah: John, this is my friend Helen.
John: Hello Helen. Pleasure to meet you. My name is John.
Helen: Hi John, my name’s Helen. Nice to meet you too.

Here are some other ways you can introduce another person:

  • John, I don’t think you’ve met Helen.
  • I don’t think you know Helen, Helen, this is John.
  • John, do you know Helen?
  • John, have you met Helen?
  • Mr Wilson, may I introduce you to Helen Jones.
  • Mr Wilson, I’d like you to meet Helen Jones.

Now practice introducing yourself and introducing other people. Click the link in the table below to take the test!
