Expressing and comparing quantity. There are a number of words that you can use to express and compare quantity. However, there are slight differences between them. A little. We use this with uncountable nouns. The meaning is some but not much. Here is an example sentence. A few. We use this with plural countable nouns. It means some but not many. Here is an example sentence. Little. This means a limited quantity, emphasising a limited amount – maybe not enough. Here is an example sentence. Few. This also expresses a little quantity, but emphasising a limited number. Again, maybe not enough. Here is an example sentence. Less. Less is the comparative of the word little. Here is an example sentence. Fewer. Fewer is the comparative of few. Here is an example sentence. Less and fewer are useful words for describing trends and changes in the IELTS test.
