Some IELTS questions will require you to read very carefully to identify the real meaning of a sentence. Here are some examples of indirect meanings in a sentence. It is far from certain whether agreement will be reached regarding this issue. This sentence actually means it is uncertain whether agreement will be reached. A common misconception is that estate agents are necessary when purchasing a home. This actually means that estate agents are NOT necessary when purchasing a home because the word misconception means a wrong belief. It would be difficult to argue that diet and health are unrelated. This actually means that diet and health are related. A final example is this; Not unlike researchers before him, Cornwell began by investigating the site itself. Not is a negative and unlike also has a negative meaning because of the prefix un-. These two negatives actually mean that Cornwell began by doing what other researchers had done.
