How can something with such subjective appeal as a piece of art be valued? While one painting may appeal to one person, but not another, there are essentially a number of factors which lay the groundwork for the pricing of art. It can be said that whether an artwork is visually attractive or interesting to look at, is, in point of fact, one of the less important consideration when establishing a monetary value for the work.
First and foremost is the question of authenticity and, surprisingly, there are levels of authenticity. A genuine Old Master is the real deal, but centuries-old copies and works done in the style of an Old Master by a relatively unknown craftsman can also attract the attention of galleries and collectors.
A second and equally critical consideration is the artist who did the work. Questions of their importance in art history and how fashionable they are may also play their role in determining market value of a particular piece.
Additionally, people place importance on the history of the painting, who has owned it previously, which collections it has been in. This is called the painting’s provenance.
As previously indicated, perhaps the least important factor relates to the aesthetic attraction of the painting, or what is sometimes referred to as ‘wall power’, more crucial is consideration of whether people actually want to own the painting due to other reasons.
