What is a museum? What is an art gallery? Are they the same? One definition of a museum is that it is an institution, often a public and national endeavour, which protects, and the artefacts that represent the cultural, historical and artistic heritage of a country or a particular region. An art gallery is designed specifically to showcase works of art, often in sparse, specifically-lit spaces. Art galleries, in particular smaller, private establishments, also sell the works of art on display. Museums, on the other hand, are basically designed to care for and the heritage with which they have been entrusted. On occasion, a museum may decide to sell a piece of art, or an artefact, for any one of a number of reasons, and this is referred to as ‘deaccession’.

New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, with more than seven million visitors, features near the top of every list recommending the best museums. Founded in 1870 and formally opened in 1872, it houses more than two million exhibits. Today the ‘Met’, as it is known affectionately, has three locations, with the most recent, the Met Breuer Museum opening in 2016. In Europe, the Louvre, perhaps most famous for its housing of Leonard da Vinci’s ‘Mona Lisa’, and Spain’s Museu del Prado in Madrid, with its extensive collection of Spanish and European artwork dating back to the 12th century, are also must-sees. It has been stated that if one visited the gargantuan State Hermitage museum in St. Petersburg, in Russia, which is reported to have the largest collection of paintings in the world, as well as other exhibits, and spent one to two minutes each exhibit, it would take 10 years to see everything the museum has to offer.

1. exhibits, excludes, excels, excites
Exhibits is the correct answer in the context and meaning of the sentence. It means ‘to put on show’ and is commonly used in the context of a museum or art gallery. It is common in the PTE test to have a list of options that begin with the same letters. Excludes, excels and excites have no relevance in this context.

Preserve is the correct answer in the context and meaning of the sentence. It means to ‘maintain the state of something’. Heal is used to talk about making a living thing better. Neglect and impair have opposite (negative) meanings.

3. annual, annum, manual, minimal
Annual is the correct answer in the context and meaning of the sentence. It is an adjective that means ‘occurring once a year’.
