Understanding PTE Part 2 Item type 4 Fill in the blanks (drag and drop) questions

What you have to do for this question type:

For this task, you will need to read the piece of text and drag and drop words given in a box across the screen to correctly fill in the gaps in the text. You are judged on your ability to use context and grammar knowledge to identify words that complete a reading text.

Task length and timing:

Each text can be up to 80 words. You will have to complete either 4 or 5 of these texts.

More information:

There are more words than gaps so you will not use all the words provided.

You can move the word from the box to the text by:

  • left-clicking on a word to select it. Keep the left mouse button held down and drag the word to the gap where you want to put it. You can also drag words between gaps.If you want to change your answer, remove the word from a gap and drag it back to the blue box.

The scoring for this question type:

This question type affects the scoring of reading. If all gaps are filled correctly, you receive the maximum score points for this question type. 1 correct answer is worth 1 point, and an incorrect answer is worth 0 points.

Useful tips:

  • Check to see if there are any collocations that can be made by using a word from the box to complete the text.
  • Collocations are words that often go together to form a familiar phrase (for, example, business organisation, government department). Checking for any collocations can help you to identify the correct word for each blank.
  • Check the grammar of the sentence to help you select the correct word.
  • Read the part of the text where the gap appears and decide what part of speech the missing word is (e.g. noun, verb, infinitive, gerund etc).
  • Then look at the options given in the box and you can reject any words that are not the right part of speech and you can rule out any verbs that are not in the form you need to make the grammar of the sentence correct.
  • Consider the word options that are left. The one that has the correct meaning will be the answer you need.
