Understanding PTE Part 3 Listening Item 2 Multiple Choice Multiple Answer

The second question type you need to complete in the PTE listening test is the multiple choice multiple answer question. You will hear a recording about an academic subject and will need to answer a multiple-choice question by selecting more than one answer.

Task length and timing:

You will have 7 seconds before the recording begins. You will hear a recording about an academic subject which will be between 40 to 90 seconds long. You will have either 2 or 3 of these recordings.

More information:

The audio will play automatically and you will only be able to listen once. You will need to listen to the recording and answer the multiple-choice question. There is more than one correct response. You will need to choose all the answers that you think are correct from a given list of possible answer options.

You can select an answer option by clicking on it using the left button on your mouse. The options you select are highlighted in yellow. If you want to change an answer, left-click on the option again to deselect it and select another one.

The scoring for this question type:

This question type affects your listening score. In this type of question, you are judged on your ability to analyse, interpret and evaluate the information you hear. If all your answers are correct, you will get the maximum score points for this question type. If one or more answers are incorrect, partial credit scoring applies – that means 1 point for a correct answer, 0 points for no answer and -1 point for every incorrect answer. It is very important to remember that selecting an incorrect answer means you will be LOSE a point, so don’t guess unless you are confident.

Useful tips:

  • You will have 7 seconds before the recording begins.  Use this time to read the question and get ready to take notes as you listen to the recording to help you answer.
  • It is not recommended that you try to select your answers as you listen because you may not hear the information in the recording in the same order as the answers are listed in the options. For this reason, as you listen, taking notes of the main points and additional details is the better strategy.
  • Note down the main points of what you listen to and details that are mentioned such as times, places, things that happened.
  • When the recording has finished, select the options that best match the meaning of what you have listened to. Don’t just choose an option because it has the same words or phrases as the recording.
  • You need to focus on meaning. Do not rely on word matching as incorrect answer may include words from the recording.
