Understanding PTE Part 3 Listening Item 4 Highlight the correct summary

The fourth question type you need to complete in the PTE listening test is the highlight correct summary question type.

What you have to do for this question type:

With this type of question, you are judged on your ability to understand, analyse and combine information from a recording and identify the most accurate summary of the recording. You will need to listen to the recording and select the paragraph that best summarises the recording from several possible options.

Task length and timing:

Each audio recording is 30-60 seconds long and will play automatically and you will only be able to listen once.

More information:

To select the summary you think is correct, click on it using the left button on your mouse. The option you select is highlighted in yellow. If you want to change your answer, left-click on the option again to deselect it, or left-click on a different option.

The scoring for this question type:

This question type affects your listening and reading score. Your answer is scored as either correct or incorrect. No credit is given for no response or an incorrect response.

Useful tips:

  • With this type of question, a useful approach is to listen to the recording first, make notes on the erasable noteboard as you listen, then read the summaries so you can choose the one that best fits what you have listened to.
  • It is not recommended you try to read the summaries before or during listening as there is too much information to read. It is more important to stay focused on the recording while making notes.
  • Notes you should take might include key words and phrases, numbers, names and dates and any information that seems important because it has been highlighted by the speaker through stress and intonation.
  • When the recording has finished, read the summary options and choose the one that is closest in detail to your notes.
